Not only is it really spicy, but since it’s fermented, it has a really lovely tanginess you just can’t get from other chili pastes. We prefer to use a fermented chili bean paste called Doubanjiang. Chili paste is the most essential ingredient in our Hunan chicken. I love blistered green beans and green onions, so that’s what we used here, but red peppers, bok choy, or even zucchini would work well.Ĭhili paste. There is not a cut-and-dry rule on what veggies to use in Hunan Chicken. Second, we use it to thicken up the sauce just a touch.
